If you are one of those fans who have been trying to connect Joker, in one way or another, to the DC Universe, you better forget that idea. Basically because its director, Todd Phillips, has qualified the statements he made a few days ago.
The reason? Then he said that the movie "I was not connected to this DC Universe.". As meaning that another (maybe future) universe could be. Now he says he is not connected to anything at all.
Or in other words, it's just a completely independent movie. Something that has clarified during his presence at the recently held Toronto International Film Festival.
This is what he said about it: "And it really wasn't intentionally. I mean the original idea when I went to [Warner Bros.] with the idea it was not just a movie, but a label, a kind of lateral label for DC, where you can do this kind of study of characters, low-rent and low-budget movies, where you get a filmmaker to enter and deepen A bit on a character. Therefore, it was never intended to connect, so I don't see it connecting to anything in the future. I think this is just this movie, you know?".
Actually we already knew from the announcement of the film that its history was going to be independent. However, all the commotion is caused by the fact that DC is restarting a lot of franchises of its film universe. It will happen with Suicide Squad and also with Batman, without going any further.
Hence, many fans were thinking about the possibility of ending up forming a completely new universe, based on all these new protagonists. We don't know what WB really intends, but it is clear that Phillips had no intention of connecting Joker With other movies.
